The Bible

For Christians, the Bible is one of the ways that God has revealed himself. It's not just another book but the very Word of God. The word 'Bible' literally means book or books and is actually a collection of books written over a period of more than 1,000 years in three languages. These books are grouped into two sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is also common to the Jews.

The Old Testament - written before the birth of Jesus and covers God's dealings with the Hebrews and the promised deliverer. This is also the sacred book of the Jews.

The New Testament - written following Jesus' death and covers his life and teachings, his death and resurrection, and the founding of the Church.

Fortunately for us, the Bible has been translated into English (and many other languages). This year, 2011, is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the most famous English translation, the Authorised Version (often called the King James Version, abbreviated KJV).

The aim of the Biblefresh initiative is to encourage a greater confidence and passion for Scripture across the Church. To celebrate the 400th anniversary there are numerous events and activities taking place across the country and in Basingstoke. See the What's Happening page for details of events in Basingstoke.

Online Bibles

BibleGateway.com is an online searchable Bible, with a choice of translations in English and other languages (from Arabic to Vietnamese). Not sure which English version to read? Try the New International Version - UK, for a translation into contemporary English with Anglicised spelling (this is near the end of the list of English translations). If you are familiar with Shakespearian English (thee's and thou's), then try the King James Version.

The United Bible Societies also have an online Bible. This has several English versions including the popular Good News Bible (also called Today's English Version), which the Bible Gateway doesn't have.

All bookshops will stock a selection of Bibles. Or buy one on Amazone.

Don't just read about the Bible - read it for yourself. It could change your world.
