Next year, 2012, will see the Olympic Games and Paralympics coming to the UK. It will be a fantastic event; but it’s not just for those taking part, trying to win the gold medal. At the Olympics, there will be:
- 26 sports
- 34 venues
- 7.7 million tickets
- 10,500 athletes
- 205 countries represented
- 17 days of competition
- 7,500 team officials
That’s without mentioning visiting families and supporters from across the world, the enormous TV coverage or the Paralympic Games! These games are also about bringing people together from across the world, offering hospitality, celebrating our common humanity and a love of sport.
More than Gold is a Christian organisation, covering all the major churches, which aims to enable all the UK churches to engage with the 2012 games. If you’re interested in how we can play our part locally in the programmes of outreach, hospitality and service, including a great sporting event for next summer in Basingstoke, come along to the Sarum Hill Centre (RG21 8ST) on Monday 11 April, 7.00 pm.
